SSA Disability Benefits Planning/Advisement

The Social Security Administration (SSA) encourages disability beneficiaries to work to their fullest capability. SSA provides work supports, called ‘Work Incentives’, that help beneficiaries try work, obtain items necessary for work, save income, maintain cash and medical benefits for a period of time, and easily access benefits in the future.

Benefits Planning and Advisement can empower individuals with disabilities who receive Social Security Disability Benefits, such as SSI and SSDI, to make informed decisions regarding work, income and benefits. Advisement can also include coordination of other public benefits such as Energy Assistance, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and Health Insurance.

Included in Benefits Planning and Advisement

Benefits Planning and Advisement is a service that helps people with disabilities and their families understand how working or making other life decisions might affect their benefits. It gives people a clear, personalized plan and explains that, in most cases, starting a job will not cause them to immediately lose their cash benefits or health insurance. It also helps address the fears and concerns many people and their families have about losing or reducing their benefits if they begin working.

Benefits counseling helps everyone understand:

  • What benefits the individual receives
  • Work incentives available when they go to work
  • How earned income impacts cash benefits, public assistance, and health insurance
  • Wage reporting requirements
  • How to save money and build assets for financial wellness (e.g. Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) accounts)
